OCR Wins Big Northwest Barista Brewing Competition

ROTY-logoI confess, I have become a coffee snob. Artisan coffee is now not only the only coffee to drink, studying it, learning about how its grown etc, have become a pass-time and a hobby. As with all hobbies, there is a fine line between hobby and obsession. I set the boundary for that line on directional spending. When coffee becomes 20% of a household GDP – we have a problem. I’m not there yet, so I’ve got room to grow!

But seriously, we all love a great cup of coffee. Luckily, I live in an area of the US that began the coffee craze; the Pacific Northwest – home of Starbucks. For years I enjoyed Starbucks coffee. It is certainly convenient and the stores offered comfortable sitting and weren’t trying to kick you out of the location as soon as your cup was empty. They became community meeting places, we had bible studies there weekly. It was great. But then I got into artisan coffees and discovered a whole new world.

My favorite coffees currently come from a local roasting company named Olympia Coffee Roasting Company. Coincidentally, it is not the first roaster in this town, but it is garnering for itself quite a following, and quite a sold reputation professionally. For this reason I share the following story:

olycoffeeFour Baristas from Olympia Coffee Roasters Company took a road trip down to Los Angeles last weekend for the Big Western Barista Competition to represent the Northwest Region in the Brewer’s Cup and Barista Competition.  Honor Forte a Barista and our Wholesale Relationship Manager and Alexander Choppin a Barista and the Manager of our Capitol Boulevard store both competed in the Brewer’s Cup.  Honor brewed our Kenya Gatomboya and Alexander brewed our Ethiopia Ademegorbota.  When all was said and done, Honor came 1st place and Alexander came in 2nd.  A huge win for both baristas and our company as a whole.  Both Baristas have won the opportunity to compete in the United States Brewer’s Cup, which will have the top three competitors from 6 regions nationwide.

Honor and Alexander brewing their coffees and replaying their award winning presentations today, Friday, February 28th at 10am at our roastery as a part of our public coffee cupping series that we host every Friday at 10am.
